Safety Training Guide: Planning Effective Workplace Training
This safety training guide provides a practical process for identifying learning needs, defining objectives, designing relevant instruction, assessing learning and evaluating whether training supports workplace capability.
Start With the Safety Training Need
Identify what people need to know or be able to do and why. Examine tasks, hazards, responsibilities and existing capability before deciding that formal training is required.
Define Learning Objectives
Describe the knowledge, understanding or performance expected after training. Objectives provide direction for content, learning activities and assessment.
Design Relevant Training
Focus content on the hazards, controls and responsibilities relevant to learners. Select learning methods according to the capability being developed.
Include Practical Learning Where Needed
Skills that require physical performance or workplace judgment may need demonstrations, supervised practice and feedback rather than instruction alone.
Assess Learning Appropriately
Match assessment with learning objectives. Knowledge questions and practical observations provide different forms of evidence and should be used for appropriate purposes.
Evaluate Workplace Application
Review whether learning is being applied and whether workplace conditions support expected performance. Training cannot compensate indefinitely for inadequate equipment, controls or supervision.
